The candidate fields are now set for the upcoming May 8 election that will determine the future makeup of both the Hereford City Commission and the Deaf Smith County Hospital Board.

The filing period ended at 5 p.m. Monday.

Of the four eligible seats on the Hereford City Commission, three will be contested May 8. Only Angie Alonzo, who is running for re-election in Commission Place 2, will go unchallenged.

Max Middleton, who was appointed to the Commission Place 4 in 2009 upon the resignation of long-time Commissioner Wayne Winget, will face challenger David Castillo, who filed his candidate’s papers Monday morning.

Cathy Bunch and Sam Metcalf, who currently represent Place 5 and Place 6 respectively – both “at large” positions – will face challenger Amparo Egbert, who was recently defeated in her quest for election as District Clerk.

According to City Secretary Suzanne Finch, the three candidates will vie for the two available seats, with the top vote recipient declared winner of Place 5 and the runner-up recipient awarded the Place 6 spot.

In the race to fill four spots on the Deaf Smith County Hospital Board, three incumbents will face three challengers, meaning six candidates will be in a race where only the top four vote recipients will be seated.

Incumbents Joe Henry, Diego Barela and Tommy Kay Stevens are being challenged by Sally Noyce, Michael Kitten and Carolyn McDonald.

A fourth incumbent, Karen Solomon, initially filed for re-election but subsequently withdrew from the race, citing personal and family concerns.
