Mid Plains Pioneer Day Reunion ended

Saturday, May 29th, 2010 marked the end of Mid Plains Pioneer Day Reunions.

Organized 87 years ago by early settlers to bring together families that were scattered over a large area of Deaf Smith County; it became an annual event and as families moved from the area, they returned to reminisce, visit and enjoy lunch prepared by Hereford cooks.

There is not a record of where they met in those early years but eventually they met at the Community Building, the Jim Hill Hotel and as the organization grew they moved to the Bull Barn.

The event has been hosted at the Hereford Senior Citizen Center.

Each year KPAN awarded a plaque to the Pioneer of the Year.  Also recognized were the Oldest Woman and the Oldest Man in attendance. Recognition was also given to the person who traveled the farthest.

Due to a lack of interest and a decline in attendance, the acting committee voted to discontinue this annual event.  The funds were dispersed to the Hereford Senior Center and to Kings Manor.
