Leonard Albert Bartels

August 26, 1928 – September 6, 2010

Leonard Albert Bartels, 82, of Hereford, Tx., died September 6, 2010, in Amarillo, Tx. Mass of Christian Burial will be September 9, 2010, at 11 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Reverend John Valdez, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors of Hereford, TX. Prayer Vigil will be recited at 7 p.m. on September 8, 2010, at Rix Funeral Chapel.

Leonard Albert Bartels was born on August 26, 1928, to John Bartels and Frieda Roemesche Bartels in Hermeleigh, Tx. He attended school in Hermeleigh, Tx.

He moved to Hereford in 1956. He married Betty Jo Guggemos on February 24, 1954.  

Mr. Bartels served in the United States Army as an Artillery Survey Specialist.  He farmed and worked as maintenance man for St. Anthony’s Catholic School from 1972 until 1989, then he was self employed doing lawn care.

Survived by wife; Betty Bartels of Hereford, Tx.; six daughters; Connie Goheen and husband, Dennis of Littlefield, Tx., Mary Jo Chandler and husband, Paul of Hale Center, Tx., Gail Saiz of Amarillo, Tx., Cathy Chase and husband, Robert of Amarillo, Tx., Jean Ann Swanson and husband, Jack of Panhandle, Tx., Christie Vanlandingham and husband, Kyle of Frederick, Colo.; four sons; Bill Bartels of Amarillo, Tx.; Mark Bartels and wife, Sylvia of Amarillo, Tx., Steve Bartels and wife, Sandra of Hereford, Tx., Bruce Bartels of Hereford, Tx.; three sisters; Anita Schilling of Dimmitt, Tx., Bernice Layman of Hereford, Tx., Hilda Reissig of Houston, Tx., one brother; Erwin Bartels of Hereford, Tx., seventeen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren
